Inverurie is one of the main towns in
Aberdeenshire and the capital of the area know as The Garioch.
Just to confuse visitors the name is spelt G A R I O C H but pronounced “Geery”. The town
has a long history and can track its existence back to Pictish times.
Traditionally Inverurie has been a thriving market town and it still hosts a monthly Farmers Market and reputedly the largest weekly Sunday morning car boot sale in Scotland at Thainstone.
The town has recently been recognised by the international Fair Trade Association as a Fairtrade town.
The centerpiece historic building in Inverurie is the Town Hall.Flower baskets are put up here every year and throughout the town centre by
a group of volunteers. The floral features are sponsored by local businesses.
In 2008 Inverurie was given a Silver Award and in 2009 the town received a Silver Gilt Award from Beautiful Scotland.
In front of Inverurie Town Hall and a main feature of the Town Centre, is the Memorial Garden and War Memorial, remembering the local people who gave their lives in the two World Wars of the 20th Century.
The Memorial Garden, the War Memorial and Inverurie Town Hall are all listed by Historic Scotland.
Historically Inverurie nestled between two rivers – the Ury and the Don.
On a sunny summer day, the River Don with it’s riverside paths offers tranquil relief from the hectic pace of life to-day.
A series of information boards give a guide to bird and fish life on the River Don and show the routes of the various paths.
The River Don Bridge carried the main road south from Inverness to Aberdeen until the town bypass was built. The beautifully constructed bridge still carries high traffic levels every day as it is on the main route to the Town Centre.
The magnificent central features of the War Memorial and Town Hall in Inverurie make it unique, and future plans are in place to close the road in front of the Town Hall to create a pedestrian & exhibition area with a water feature.
Following the gaze of the Gordon Highlander on the War Memorial, as he prepares to march to Europe & battles further afield, you can see the straight approach road from the south.
Inverurie is developing a reputation as a tourist town. It is a marvelous centre for walking with the Bennachie hill range.overlooking the town and many miles of forest walks. Angling, golf, family history study and good dining are just some of the other popular pastimes to be enjoyed in Inverurie.
And one of the big interest areas for visitors is the stone circles. There are a large number of important stones & other relics preserved in the area.
Hopefully we have given you a flavour of Inverurie and a taste of what it has to offer.
